About us

Skan El is an independent electrical engineering company within the maritime sector, based in Ålesund, Norway. With more than 50 years of experience, we deliver design and planning of complete electrical installations for modern and technologically advanced vessels. Our team consists of six highly qualified professionals, engineers and electrical specialists, all with a solid background in the maritime industry.

A Trusted Partner for Shipyards and Shipowners
We work closely with shipyards, shipowners, and ship design companies, as well as electrical installation firms, both nationally and internationally. Our role is to contribute technical quality, precision, and efficient solutions throughout the entire project lifecycle.

FMEA Analysis and Testing
In addition to electrical design and project planning, we perform FMEA analyses (Failure Modes & Effects Analysis), a mandatory requirement for vessels classified as DP2 and DP3. We also actively participate in FMEA testing to verify that systems meet the strictest requirements for safety, functionality, and reliability.

Skan El through the years

1966

Skan El established

Dansk Elektricitets-Compagni A/S opens a branch in Ålesund under the name SKAN-EL-SKIPS-PROSJEKTERING. Engineer Lyder Olsen is appointed as the first manager.

1987

New company structured

Skan-El moves to Spjelkavik and becomes a stock company (AS). Focus shifts to electrical engineering for ships. Inspection work in China increases in the early 2000s.

2006 – 2008

Acquisition and rebranding

Skipsteknisk AS acquires the company in 2006. In 2008, the name changes to SKAN EL AS, as it is known today.

2012 – Today

50+ years of experience

Skan El relocates to Lerstadveien, where the company is still based. Skan El has evolved into an independent marine electrical engineering and consultancy firm with a global presence. Combining over 50 years of experience with new talent, the company continues to grow and innovate.

Certified for Annual DP Trials

As an IMCA member, we offer Annual DP Trials, performing at-sea tests to verify FMEA analysis over time.

Global Reach and Shipyard Visits
Skan El is involved in shipbuilding projects across multiple continents. Site visits to shipyards are a regular part of our work, with ongoing contracts in China, Chile, Croatia, Spain, Turkey, India, and Norway.

From Local Yards to Global Projects
One day, we might travel just 30 minutes to a shipyard in Hareid or Brattvåg, near Ålesund. The next, we could be on a 20-hour flight to the other side of the world, visiting a project in India or China.
